The disk image contains a copy of all sectors of the disk, whether they’re used or not, and copies them to other CDs or DVDs exactly as they’re stored in the disk image.Ī Macintosh disk image file is a mirror copy of the Mac file system and can be mounted on a computer as a virtual hard disk drive. The data is compressed, so the disk image is smaller than the original data.Ĭhoose this if you want to use the disk image with a third-party application. (This format replaces sparse disk image.)Ĭhoose this If you don’t need to add more files to the disk image.Ĭhoose this if you don’t need to add more files to the image and want to conserve space. For example, if you create a 100 MB sparse bundle disk image, its maximum size is 100 MB. The disk image is just large enough to hold the files in it and expands to its maximum size as you add files to it.

This is why apple dropped stuffit from mac os x tiger because they wanted people to use disk images + not use stuffit anymoreĬhoose this if you want to continue adding files to the disk image after it’s created.Ĭhoose this if you want to continue adding files to the image and want to conserve space. dmg file frm X is using a compatible file system (mac os standard or extended) (denoted above as ***)īut this would be the best and most safe way to transfer files NATIVELY between X + 9 i will take a look and post a link to the other thread!īut i think it will work (mounting. So i beleive it is possible to go backwards as well providing you have updated your disk copy version to this I had made some post about a rare version of disk copy that was able to mount. Im not so sure this is possible to go backwards from. This encapsulates + retains all proper file meta data such as resource forks icons associations etc img file from mac os 9 to a mac os x disk img on mac os 9 using disk copy and then transfering the. But my problem persists.Transfering files between x + 9 can be done MOST SAFELY + MOST EFFECTIVELYīy using this method. I have been using Sheepshaver for a long time, and just by following that simple rule, I have had no problems with it whatsoever. Second, and even more importantly, failure to do this seems sometimes lead to filesystem corruption on my real Mac, and the same thing might occur on your PC. First, it often seems necessary for Sheepshaver to properly interpret the files identity (type, creator, etc.).

I have found this to be important for 2 reasons. Always use Sheepshaver to copy the app or file to a local drive using Finder within Sheepshaver first. I was running Sheepshaver on a Mac running OS X, so I'm not sure if this applies in quite the same way to running it in Windows.Įither way, its worthwhile to be aware that you should never be running apps or using files within Sheepshaver while they reside on the Sheepshaver share drive. IIRC, all I had to do was copy them from the shared "UNIX" drive in Sheepshaver to a local Sheepshaver drive before attempting to unstuff, run, or use any type of file. When I began using Sheepshaver, I had lots of trouble with apps appearing as plain document files. One last point may be worth mentioning, although it may not apply to your situation.

I´ll update the OP somewhat to reflect this.

I´m farily certain that they all came with Stuffit Expander.

I´m sure I´ll find a Mac OS 8 or 8.5 or 9 CD at my parents, plus they I believe lots of old MacFormat CDs in a dresser in their loft. Unfortunately as per Jables' post and my experiences using BetterZip, it seems clear now that I won´t be able to get neither an "externally un-binhexed" game installer, nor any version of Stuffit Expander sitting in a plain folder, if I´ll have to copy it from my PC, into the emulated Mac intact.īut no worries. Fortunately I believe I have access to old CDs from which I´ll finally be able to get a working version of Stuffit Expander into the emuator.
Sheepshaver bin file archive#
I have tried to extract the installer from the archive with the Windows version of Stuffit Expander, but when I bring the file into the emulated Mac, the system thinks it is only a document, and not an application.ĮDIT: While I have now several old versions of Stuffit Expander sitting on my PC, and also have access to tools for unextracting game installer archives outside of the Mac environment, it seems clear that these unarchived files won´t survive being copyied into the emulated Mac.įiles need to be "binhexed" to survive the PC-Mac transfer, but without a working version of the expander already present in the Mac, I´m screwed. With a link to an installer for Stuffit Expander 7.0, in a. bin archives.ĭoes anyone have an old version of Stuffit Expander lying around? I believe any version prior to version 8 would be fine.
